Zeta Italy News: The police of Palermo, Sicily managed a huge anti-mafia operation which took to 183 arrest warrants. The orders and the arrests hit the core of the Mafia organisation which tried to rebuilt its structures between the boss in jail and those outside.  Communications between the members were handled with the latest generation of mobile phones equipped with special encrypted software to organise meetings between members.

Meat factory on fire

The Inalca factory, in Reggio Emilia, belonging to the Cremonini group, was engulfed in a large fire overnight. The smoke was visible from a great distance, causing extensive damage. The fire even melted the windows of nearby homes. The neighbors were evacuated. The police are investigating the cause of the fire.

Tunisian man killed in ambush in Ribera, Agrigento

A 30-year-old Tunisian was shot in an ambush in Sicily outside a bar frequented by foreigners. The assailant fired from a passing car before fleeing. The victim was rushed to Fratelli Parlapiano hospital but did not survive. The area, known for a high North African population and seasonal farmworkers, has been under police scrutiny due to drug trafficking concerns.

New ideas of the government for the migrant center in Albania

President Meloni remains steadfast in her decision regarding the migrant center in Albania, despite the judge’s rejection of the asylum seeker transfer. The Gjder and Shengji centers remain empty and the aim of the government is to convert them as  centers for repatriations.

Teacher reports student’s parents

In Rome, Carabinieri arrested two parents, a 44-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man, for stalking their son’s teacher. The teacher reported the crime of stalking in December, stating that she was subjected to continuous harassment by the parents of one of her students, creating a severe state of anxiety and fear in her.

Tragedy on the emergency lane

A 29-year-old man died last night in Bologna after being struck by two heavy vehicles on the southbound carriageway of the A14 near San Lazzaro. He was traveling with a family member when he stopped the car in the emergency lane because he felt unwell. Upon exiting the vehicle, he was hit by two trucks.

Italy drops to 52nd place in Corruption Perception Index

According to Transparency International’s latest Corruption Perception Index (CPI), Italy has fallen to 52nd position out of 180 countries. This decline reflects ongoing challenges in combating corruption within the nation. Despite previous improvements, such as climbing to 42nd place in 2021, Italy continues to face significant hurdles in aligning with the European Union’s average standards.

A decade of women in science: progress made, but gender gap persists

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science marks its 10th anniversary, yet gender equality in STEM remains distant. In Italy, only 16.8% of women aged 25-34 hold a STEM degree, compared to 37% of men, according to Istat 2024. Workplace disparities are evident, especially in IT, engineering, and architecture. Though female enrollments have risen since 2011, growth is mainly in northern Italy.

Sanremo 2025 kicks off with its first night 

The highly anticipated ‘Festival della Canzone’ begins tonight at 20:40 from the Ariston Theatre. Hosts Carlo Conti, Gerry Scotti, and Antonella Clerici will lead the first evening, featuring performances from all 29 competing artists. Jovanotti will be the night’s special guest. The jury of the Press Room, TV, and Web will vote on tonight’s performances, and a ranking will be revealed live, showing only the top five names without specific placements.

Inter defeats Fiorentina 2-1, closes gap to Napoli in Serie A title race

Football team Inter secured a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina at San Siro, getting close to Serie A leaders Napoli for just one point.
